Schema coordination in federated database management: a comparison with schema integration
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduced a new approach, termed schema coordination, as an alternative to the well-known schema integration approach for processing cooperative queries in federated database systems. The schema coordination approach is based on the attribute correspondence matrix that links similar attributes in all component databases. In this paper, we compare the schema coordination approach with the schema integration approach for both metadata management and cooperative query processing. We demonstrate that schema coordination ooers a much simpler methodology that enables logical data independence and is especially better suited for database federations consisting of many competing databases with ever-evolving metadata.

Resolving Structural Conflicts in the Integration of ER Schemas
Schema integration is essential to define a global schema that describes all the data in existing databases participating in a distributed or federated database management system. This paper describes a different approach to integrate two Entity-Relationship (ER) schemas. We focus on the resolution of structural conflicts. that is, when related real world concepts are modelled using different c...
متن کاملAn Architecture for Managing Schema Evolution in a Federated Spatial Database System
A Federated Spatial Database System (FSDBS) is the integration of multiple spatial data sources and the realisation of effective spatial data sharing. FSDBS environments are becoming increasingly popular as more and more spatial and non-spatial datasets are integrated, especially those across a number of independent organisations. However, in a FSDBS environment, database schemas are subject to...

Proc. 18 International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'99, Paris, Nov.'99), LNCS, Springer-Verlag, 1999. Federated database systems provide a homogeneous interface to possibly heterogeneous local database systems. This homogeneous interface consists of a global schema which is the result of a logical integration of the schemata of the corresponding local database systems and le systems. I...
متن کاملSchema Interpretation: An Aid to the Schema Analysis in Federated Database Design
A new method for schema analysis is described in which reasoning is based upon the real–world semantics of schema elements. The method distinguishes between intrinsic and in–context semantics, which respectively provide a basis for shallow and deep semantic comparisons between element. Real–world semantics are represent as element interpretations which map elements into a pre–defined common con...
متن کاملIntegrating Multilevel Security Policies in Multilevel Federated Database Systems
Federated database systems solve the problem of sharing information among independent entities. When building and operating such a federated database system, it is necessary to protect data. Because of heterogeneities among security systems of component databases an integration of them is essential, taking into account new security features of the federation itself. This paper describes a multi...
